CLOCKWORK
Author's
Note: I did this essay on the book, Clockwork. And particularly on the main
character Karl.
In Clockwork, Karl
comes off as a no good slacker, but in the end he changes into a 'on task' kind
of guy.
For example, he was
suppose to make a piece of clockwork to show the village, but he didn't get it
done. When he was yelled at for not finishing the job, he just made up excuses.
Karl made it seem
like it didn't matter to him, but as you read further in the book you realize
that it really got to him. He felt horrible and wanted to die because it felt
like he let everyone down.
The catalyst is when
Dr. Kalmenius comes and grants Karl one wish. With Karl feeling horrible, he
wishes for a wonderful piece of clockwork. Sir Ironsoul (the piece of clockwork
Karl wished for)was a wonderful piece full of danger.
Now Karl has Sir
Ironsoul to present to everyone, he realizes there was no need for the suicidal
thoughts. He notices that to get through life in a happy way, to try to look at
the bright side of things. Karl ends up being pleased that Dr. Kalmenius came
and helped him figure this out.
I think that Karl
influenced the younger kids, in the village, that they aren't going to get very
far in life if they don’t try.
